View Unit : Carry out searches of people and their property

State the current relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and guidelines relating to authority to search people and their property

Carry out searches at frequencies and in patterns that are in line with the organisation’s policies and procedures

Confirm that individuals have understood the reasons given for why they have been selected for search

Ensure consent to search has been given before searching individuals

Take appropriate and permitted action, in line with the organisation’s policies and procedures, if consent to search is refused

Carry out searches in suitable locations, in the presence of suitable witnesses and in a polite, professional and courteous manner

Maintain personal health, safety and welfare while carrying out searches

Record and report the details of searches in line with instructions and the organisation’s policies and procedures

List the unauthorised items that should be looked for during searches

Identify unauthorised items found during searches correctly

Take prompt and appropriate action, in line with the organisation’s policies and procedures, when unauthorised items are found

Establish the reason for the person being in possession of unauthorised items

Describe the possible reactions of suspects to finding unauthorised items and how to deal with them

Demonstrate how to deal safely with unauthorised items found during a search and retain them securely as evidence

Demonstrate how to apprehend people suspected of having unauthorised items, following instructions and approved policies and procedures

Record and report the relevant details relating to the unauthorised items, clearly and accurately, to the appropriate person within required timescales

Maintain personal health, safety and welfare while responding to finding unauthorised items
