This unit is subject to the requirements set out in the Assessment Strategy for the sector in which it is being assessed.
The assumed pre-requisite is that the learner undertaking this unit will be an experienced operator in a laundry or dry cleaning environment.
Knowledge will also be required of the following regulations, rules and guidelines:
a. The organisation’s rules, codes, guidelines and standards
b. Equipment operating procedures
c. Machine and equipment capabilities
d. Manufacturer’s instructions
Know how to make sure that handling equipment is available and serviceable
Describe how to ensure equipment is serviceable and safe to use
Describe what defects can arise and how to deal with them
Know how to identify and check the availability and suitability of locations for storing goods and materials
Describe the types of goods and materials to be stored
Explain the criteria for assessing the suitability of locations for storing goods ensuring the quality of the goods whilst in storage
Know how to place goods and materials in designated locations using methods that comply with safety regulations
Describe the storage requirements for the range and types of goods to be held in storage and where information about them can be obtained
Explain how to minimise the risk of damage to people, property, goods and materials
Describe the procedure to adopt when a designated location is not available
Describe relevant responsibilities under the:
• Health and Safety at Work Act
• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
• Other relevant legislation
Know how to make the best use of available space placing goods and materials so that they can be accessed safely in the required sequence
Describe the procedure to ensure that the best use of available space is made in placing goods and materials so they can be accessed in the required sequence
Know how to check that the work has been carried out as planned
Describe how to identify and deal with problems/faults which may arise when carrying out the work
Describe the costs associated with damaged goods and materials and explain why it is important that damaged goods and materials are reported promptly
Know how to keep accurate records, complete forms and other documentation
Describe what types of records are kept and the importance of completing them accurately
Explain what forms and documentation are commonly used and how to complete them
Know how to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers
Describe the forms of communication e.g. written, oral, electronic etc. and give examples of the various forms of communication
