This unit is subject to the requirements set out in the Assessment Strategy for the sector in which it is being assessed.
The assumed pre-requisite is that the learner undertaking this unit will be an experienced operator in a laundry or dry cleaning environment.
Knowledge will also be required of the following regulations, rules and guidelines:
a. The organisation’s rules, codes, guidelines and standards
b. Equipment operating procedures
c. Machine and equipment capabilities
d. Manufacturer’s instructions
Know how to make equipment ready for use
Describe how to check that equipment is safe and ready for use
Explain the necessary routine maintenance of machines
Know how to select the work required
Describe how to select and classify work for repair or alteration
Explain the procedure for storing items prior to repair
Explain how to interpret care labels and describe fabric construction and the properties of fibres
Describe how to determine the priority of items for repair or alteration
Know how to repair/alter items to the required standard safely
Describe how to operate the repair equipment safely
Explain how to make adjustments to the sewing machine as per company procedures
Describe the procedures for returning items to the correct place after final inspection
Describe relevant responsibilities under the:
• Health and Safety at Work Act
• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
• Other relevant legislation
Know how to identify any problems which may occur
Describe the common faults that occur both in the equipment or finish of items
Explain the procedures to be followed to report and rectify any faults which may arise
Know how to keep accurate records, complete forms and other documentation
Describe what types of records are kept and the importance of completing them accurately
Explain what forms and documentation are commonly used and how to complete them
Know how to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers
Describe the forms of communication e.g. written, oral, electronic etc. and give examples of the various forms of communication
