Learning Outcome - The learner will:Assessment Criterion - The learner can:

Demonstrate how to plan a recording session and how to use an audio recorder to record a piece of music evaluating and analysing the process.

1.1

Produce a detailed recording plan with a full evaluation of the following:

a. piece or piece’s of music to be recorded including instrumentation and personnel;

b. accommodation, location and accessibility;

c. inventory of resources required for recording mics etc;

d. schedule, date and timescale;

e. communication with musicians confirming schedule;

f. creation of track sheet/plan;

g. correct labelling of desk and/or digital audio workstation tracks.

1.2

Create a multi-track live recording of an ensemble of at least four musicians which meets the following requirements:

a. the recording should last a minimum of four minutes;

b. there should be at least eight simultaneously recorded audio tracks;

c. use of a variety of microphones/DIs for different applications (e.g. dynamic/condenser etc.) including the use of phantom power and DI box;

d. use of a variety of micing techniques e.g. close micing, ambient micing;

e. use of correct gain structure at input ensuring no harmonic distortion;

f. use of dynamic effects on at least two tracks e.g. compressor, limiter, gate;

g. recording of at least two overdubs (e.g. vocal overdub over guide track and solo);

h. use of sub groups where appropriate;

i. effective use of EQ, pan and level to mix the track;

j. use of at least two internal or external effects, including glodal bus routed /aux send(e.g. reverb) and insert on one channel (e.g. chorus) on at least two tracks;

k. creation of a stereo track guide mix demonstrating correct gain structure.

1.4

Evaluate and analyse the success of the finished recording made in 1.2 in relation to the specified criteria and compare recording quality with at least one example of professionally recorded work, assessing strengths and areas for development.
