Upon completion of this unit the learner will be able to understand organisational structure and design, business management and the role of the manager in an organisation. They will also understand the management theories applied to decision making planning and control processes.

Understand organisational and management behaviour.

Critically evaluate management theories including classical, behavourial, qualitative and contemporary.

Analyse the skills needed by managers at different levels of the organisation.

Identify management principles and relate these to organisational issues and problems.

Critically evaluate organisational cultures and the relationship between strategy and structure in organisations.

Understand planning and decision making concepts and the impact of contemporary issues on these.

Analyse the nature and scope of management decision making across all levels.

Use management techniques to inform the decision making process including analyses, forecasting and planning and control models and differentiate between possible solutions.

Manage individual and group behaviour in a human resource setting.

Critically evaluate the factors affecting people resource activities including, human resource planning, selection, training and reward strategies.

Assess the importance of leadership and management styles on the motivation of employees.

Analyse the key characteristics of team roles and evaluate how these impact on group performance.

Identify and implement strategies to manage conflict between groups and/or individuals.

Understand the techniques used in the management and control of business processes.

Evaluate the use of control systems to support the management function including planning control lifecycle, budgetary and inventory control, balanced score card and benchmarking.

Evaluate the role of IT systems, management information systems and technology as tools for managers.

Analyse the role of the manager within different functional areas within an organisation.
