Structure Requirements
The IB has developed the Diploma Programme as a pre-college/university qualification aimed at students in the 16–19 age group. It is an academically rigorous curriculum usually studied over two years and offered internationally in English, French and Spanish. The IB sets the curriculum and assessment requirements for the programme and is the sole organization entitled to award the IB Diploma. Only centres authorized by the International Baccalaureate are eligible to teach the curriculum and register candidates. The Diploma Programme is based on the study of six academic areas or ‘groups’ and a compulsory core. Candidates for the IB Diploma must satisfy assessment requirements in six subjects, each studied over a period of two years, except that not more than two standard level courses (excluding languages ab initio and pilot subjects) may be completed in the first year of the programme. The six subjects must be selected from the six groups as described in the current IB Handbook of Procedures for the appropriate examination session, although they can choose a second subject from groups 1 to 5 instead of a group 6 subject, with at least three and not more than four subjects being offered at higher level and the others at standard level. Group 1 Language A1 · literature based course in the student’s first or best language (46 languages are regularly available and others are available on request) Group 2 Language A2, B and ab initio · 25 or more modern and classical languages are offered for abilities ranging from complete beginner (ab initio) to highly competent second language learner (A2) Group 3 Individuals and Societies · History, Geography, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Business and Management and Information Technology in a Global Society Group 4 Experimental Sciences · Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Design Technology Group 5 Mathematics and Computer Science · Mathematics HL, Mathematics SL, Mathematical Studies, Further Mathematics and Computer Science (as an elective) Group 6 The Arts · Visual Arts, Music and Theatre Arts The compulsory core In addition to the six subjects, candidates for the IB Diploma must complete: · Theory of knowledge (TOK) · Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) an approved programme of extra-curricular activities · The Extended essay Performance in each subject is graded on a scale of 1 point (minimum) to 7 points (maximum). For the IB Diploma, a maximum of 3 points is awarded for combined performance in theory of knowledge and extended essay. The maximum Diploma Programme points score is, therefore, 45.
